Who in Canada does the TDG regulations apply to?
TDG regulations apply to anyone in Canada who handles, offers for transport, or transports dangerous goods. This includes manufacturers, distributors, drivers, warehouse personnel, and administrative staff involved in shipping documentation. Whether you're moving goods by road, rail, air, or marine transport, these federal regulations are in place to prevent accidents and environmental hazards.
If your role involves dangerous goods in any way, you are subject to the TDG regulations. You must be properly trained and certified to ensure both legal compliance and workplace safety.
Who is responsible for providing your TDG training?
Your employer is legally responsible for providing TDG training. Under the TDG Act, it is the employer’s duty to ensure proper training is provided. Any employee involved in the handling or transportation of dangerous goods must receive appropriate instruction and certification. The training must be specific to the employee’s role, duties, and the type of dangerous goods being handled.
Employers must maintain a valid TDG certificate for each trained employee. They must also renew the training when it expires or if the employee’s responsibilities change.
How long is your TDG certification valid for?
A TDG training certificate is typically valid for 3 years, after which it must be renewed. However, some provinces, employers, or job functions may require more frequent recertification. It’s essential to keep your certification up to date to remain compliant with federal and provincial laws. This ensures safe practices when working with dangerous goods.
It is also the responsibility of the employer to track certification expiry dates and arrange for TDG recertification training as needed.
What is the TDG Act about?
The Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act (TDG Act) is Canada’s federal legislation governing the safe transportation of hazardous materials. Enforced by Transport Canada, the TDG Act sets out requirements for packaging, labeling, documentation, training, and reporting related to dangerous goods.
The main goal of the Act is to protect public safety, health, and the environment by preventing incidents during the transportation of hazardous substances. It applies to all modes of transport—road, rail, marine, and air—and mandates that everyone involved in the transportation chain understands their responsibilities.
Our training materials are fully aligned with the latest TDG regulations and help participants understand and comply with the TDG Act through practical, real-world scenarios.
